Research/Scholarly Activities for General Surgery Residents

At Grand Strand Medical Center, General Surgery Residency Program, we foster active participation in scholarly activity.  Each resident is required to submit at least three projects including 2 case reports/review articles and a quality improvement project. During your residency training you will have many opportunities to engage in other forms of scholarly activity. These include weekly evidence-based M&M, didactics, resident and faculty presentations, score lectures, and Grand Round presentations. We also have monthly simulation activities with small group hands on training. There will be scheduled training for FLS and FES along with modules for robotic training. There will be ample opportunity to be involved in additional Quality Improvement projects, poster and podium research presentations at Regional and National level Surgery Conferences.

Grand Strand Medical Center has built a culture of producing high quality research, case report publications, local and national conference presentations and quality improvement projects.

Some highlights for each type of scholarly activity include:

Quality improvement:

  • Longitudinal research curriculum during your PGY1 year which will culminate in starting your own QI project
  • This project will also count towards your Performance Improvement requirement
  • Support to present at local and national conferences.

Case Report:

  • Month-long opportunity to spend time in research during Subspecialty rotations in your PGY1 year which will culminate in a case report/case series to present during HCA Poster Day

Research:

    • Faculty assistance with scholarly projects
    • Research lectures on basic statistics, methods and methodology from South Atlantic Division research leadership
