Mission Statement
The Grand Stand Medical Center Transitional Year Residency Program’s mission is to develop the next generation of physicians and physician leaders. As a part of HCA Healthcare, we are driven by a single mission: Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life.
This program is designed to offer residents a rewarding, educational environment where residents are provided individualized learning opportunities by faculty and staff who support and sustain one another throughout quality care delivery. Our faculty are committed to ensuring the residents' clinical experience and educational needs are fulfilled while expanding residents’ perspectives to be inclusive of cultures, values, and ideals.
Program Overview
Thank you for your interest in our Transitional Program in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Grand Strand Medical Center has a strong graduate medicinal education program which includes residency programs in internal medicine, general surgery, emergency medicine, family medicine, and anesthesiology. In addition, we began both an ER ultrasound fellowship and a palliative care fellowship in 2021.
Our Transitional Year Residency Program accepts 12 residents each academic year for one year of post-graduate training to prepare them for subsequent residencies in medical, surgical and other specialties. We consider all candidates who apply to our program through the ERAS application service.
The Transitional Year curriculum is tailored to meet all ACGME requirements for PGY2 advancement in areas such as anesthesiology, radiology, dermatology, radiation oncology, and physical medicine and rehabilitation. In addition, we provide broad exposure to a variety of surgical and medical subspecialties.
The Transitional Year Residency Program is sponsored by the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Grand Strand Health. The faculty is comprised of approachable, dedicated teachers who take pride in molding trainees into excellent physicians and the upper-level residents in programs across our institution are excited to work with and teach transitional year residents on their services.
The goal of our program is to provide a healthy work-life balance that provides an excellent clinical experience while allowing you time to experience our beach community and the surrounding area. Resident wellness is a major focus at our institution.
Our program sponsors several wellness events including a monthly dinner, team-building events and intermural sports within the GME programs. After you evaluate programs and see all the benefits we have to offer, we sincerely hope you will consider us for training.

Transitional year residents will participate in a variety of conferences based upon their given rotation. The table below provides a snapshot of the didactic schedules.
Didactics
The Transitional Year program hosts a monthly “TY Tuesday” session that focuses on team building, the business of medicine, professional and leadership topics. Residents may also present Journal Club topics at TY Tuesday. These sessions are held off-site at some of our favorite local restaurants.

Transitional year residents follow this conference series while on required Internal Medicine rotations and electives.

Grand Strand Medical Center does not offer observerships at this time.
We do offer externships or “sub-I’s” to fourth year medical students through the Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS). Our rotations can be viewed by logging into VSAS.

The Transitional Year Residency is a one year residency program with a broad clinical focus with the intent of preparing the graduates for their advanced residency programs (i.e., anesthesia, dermatology, radiology, etc.). The goals of training are similar across all intern years, with a focus on both inpatient and outpatient patient care. Typically, surgical preliminary interns will focus on surgical patients, while medical preliminary interns will take care of medical patients, and pediatrics preliminary interns will take care of children.
A Transitional Year Resident/Intern will take care of all three patient populations, leading to broad clinical exposure. The greatest asset of the Transitional Year Residency is that there is a great deal of flexibility in scheduling and elective preference, allowing TY Residents to focus on their personal interests and tailor their education experience.
Our program focuses on interactive small group teaching and one-on-one interaction with experienced physicians. You will be exposed to high volumes of medical and surgical patients at one of the busiest hospital organizations in the region, providing exposure to a variety of both common and complex pathologies.
Grand Strand Medical Center is home to one of the busiest Trauma Centers in the state (one of five with Level I Trauma designation) and is also a center of stroke and cardiovascular excellence. Our residents are an important part of the medical culture and are integrated in other aspects including hospital wide quality improvement and research opportunities.
Yes, Transitional Year residents must complete a number of projects during their year at Grand Strand Medical Center. During the course of the academic year, Transitional Year residents must complete two Patient-Centered Evidenced Based Learning Exercise (PEBLE) assignments. Transitional Year residents are also required to participate in team-based Quality Improvement (QI) projects focusing on patient safety and/or enhancing medical education. Transitional Year Residents are also required to submit at least one of the following during their TY year: an abstract/poster at a local or national meeting, or submit a manuscript to a peer reviewed journal.

We do not have absolute score requirements. However, we do hope that our applicants pass their examinations on their first attempt. In order to be eligible for ranking (mid-February), a candidate must have passed Step 1, Step 2 CK, and Step 2 CS.
Applicants must not be more than two years from their medical school graduation dates.
Yes, all international medical graduates (IMGs) must have a valid ECFMG certificate before being considered for an interview. IMG applicants must also have recent US clinical experience and provide letters of recommendation demonstrating such.
Due to the nature and short length of the Transitional Year Residency Program, we will not be able to accommodate residents requiring visa sponsorship.
