J. Burton Banks, MD, FAAFP
Program Director
Dr. Banks began his medical career at the age of 3, when he watched Marcus Welby, Family Doctor regularly on his grandmother’s black and white television. While the quality of his stethoscope and reflex hammer have improved from the plastic versions in his first Doctor’s Kit, his passion for Family Medicine has remained strong.
Dr. Banks graduated from Wake Forest University before attending medical school at East Carolina University School of Medicine (now Brody School of Medicine), where he also completed his residency in Family Medicine. In his career, he has practiced full-spectrum rural family medicine, outpatient and urgent care medicine, as well as academic medicine. He is a former Assistant Editor for The Journal of Family Practice, and he has published in American Family Physician as well as The Journal of Family Practice, and he has co-authored an evidence-based parenting book. His clinical interests include pediatric and adolescent medicine, child maltreatment, physician-patient communication and medical humanities.
He is married and has three children. Most of his free time is spent traveling to his son’s soccer matches.
Anthony Shadiack, DO
Associate Program Director
Dr. Anthony Shadiack received his Osteopathic degree from the UMDNJ-School of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his Family Medicine residency and Primary Care Sports Medicine fellowship at Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School where he worked with two Division I college athletic programs. He was fortunate to work with a leader in the field of concussion, Dr. Margot Putukian.
He notes, “As the Associate Program Director of the Grand Strand Family Medicine residency, my goal is to help each resident become a leader within the field of Family Medicine. I truly believe in leading by example. I strive to promote scholarly activity among the residents and faculty and have given several presentations both within the community and at national conferences. I am a faculty member for the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners and participate in COMLEX exam question development. I enjoy teaching during didactics and staffing. I want to ensure that our residents walk away from this residency with a strong foundation in common Family Medicine procedures and have the ability to complete a thorough musculoskeletal exam. I pride myself on being a community physician, mentor, and innovative teacher.”
Dr. Shadiack comments, “I am married to my amazing wife, Heather, and we have two wonderful children, Anthony Jr. and Christopher. We enjoy spending time with family, playing games, traveling, cooking, playing ping pong and scuba diving”.
Sean Gibbs, MD
Core Faculty
Dr. Gibbs comes to us via Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He earned his undergraduate degree at Pennsylvania State University and then went on to study medicine at Ohio State University. He returned home for his family medicine residency training at Crozer-Keystone before moving to Myrtle Beach almost 15 years ago.
He brings years of experience working both as an urgent care physician and as a hospitalist. Most recently he was the hospitalist medical director here at Grand Strand before his passion for teaching led him to transition over to GME and the family medicine residency program when it opened in 2017.
Outside of work, when he is not rooting for his Penn State Nittany Lions on the football field, he can often be found boating during the summer months or playing in the local softball league with a handful of residents each fall. In his own words he writes, “In my years of practicing medicine, nothing has come close to being as rewarding as teaching our residents and watching them grow both professionally and as people.”
Lisa Wright, MD
Core Faculty
Dr. Wright grew up in middle Tennessee and knew from the age of 10 years that she would be a physician. She majored in Chemistry at Tennessee Technological University and then graduated medical school from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee. She knew early on that she would find much joy in practicing family medicine in South Carolina, so she did her residency training at Greenville Memorial Hospital in Greenville, South Carolina.
While loving traditional family medicine with obstetrics, Dr. Wright ventured to rural western Nebraska for three years doing inpatient medicine, outpatient medicine and delivering lots of babies. She returned to South Carolina and has served as teaching faculty, Chief Medical Officer of a federally qualified health center and practicing outpatient medicine. She joined HCA Grand Strand Family Medicine residency in January of 2020 and is more than excited to be again contributing to the future medical needs of communities by teaching resident physicians. She enjoys women’s health, preventative medicine, diabetes care, adolescent medicine and maintaining a healthy work/life balance. She strives to teach the practical part of practicing medicine to the residents and how to make life be its best while practicing the best quality of medicine.
In her free time, Dr. Wright enjoys spending time with her husband and three children while at the beach, biking, game nights and travelling. She tries her best to live out two things that her father has taught her, which are ”do not compare yourself to others, but rather you be better today than you were yesterday” and “enjoy the journey and do not just be focused on the finish line.”
